Painted during his stay at a mental hospital in Saint-Rémy de Provence, The Starry Night is arguably Van Gogh's most famous work. In the painting, Van Gogh returns to the darker colors of his earlier works, using different shades of blue to create a dreamlike landscape of a small village and tall cypress trees, in front of a whirling sky. The Starry Night also represents a shift in Van Gogh's mental health, having painted it during a relapse of paranoia and depression.
