Joseph Mallord William Turner, The Fighting Temeraire, 1839
FINE ART PRINT
In The Fighting Temeraire, English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner paints the HMS Temeraire as it is tugged by a steamboat to Rotherhithe, where the old warship is to be broken down. For many, the scene is utterly patriotic, a farewell to a ship that performed heroically in The Battle of Tralfalgar. Turner, who often painted river scenes, was at the height of his career in 1839, as seen through the painting's use of color and light to create an atmospheric feeling.
