Girl with a Pearl Earring is an emblematic Dutch Golden Age painting, and Vermeer's most famous work. Though it is said that Vermeer modelled the subject after his eldest daughter, the painting was not meant to be a portrait, but rather a 'Tronie,' or painting of an imaginary figure. The painting shows Vermeer's mastery of light, as the subject's face and soft expression is perfectly illuminated, along with her shiny pearl earring.
